Introduction: Why Medicare at 65 Matters More Than Ever

If you’re turning 65 soon, congratulations! Along with birthday wishes comes something else that’s just as important: Medicare eligibility. Navigating Medicare for the first time can feel overwhelming, but the good news is you don’t have to figure it out alone. This comprehensive guide highlights essential resources that can help you understand your options, enroll with confidence, and avoid costly mistakes.

Understanding the Basics: Medicare 101

The fundamentals:

Medicare.gov: The official government site offers detailed explanations of Parts A, B, C, and D. The website is easy to navigate and offers everything that you need to know before talking with an insurance agent.

Medicare & You" Handbook: Mailed annually to all beneficiaries, this guide is available digitally as well and breaks down coverage, costs, and key timelines. This is the single best resource available. It is easy to read and understand.

3. When and How to Enroll

Timing matters.

Missing deadlines could lead to penalties.

Initial Enrollment Period (IEP): Starts three months before the month you turn 65 and ends three months after. NOTE: If you have health insurance that is provided by your employer you may not have to enroll at age 65. This applies if your employer has twenty or more employees and provides qualified health insurance. In this case your IEP is three months before the end of your coverage, the month your coverage ends and three months after coverage ends.

Use the Social Security website (ssa.gov) to sign up for Medicare Part A and B. If you do not already have a mysocialsecurity.gov account, this is a must-have resource.

Already receiving Social Security benefits? You’ll be enrolled automatically.

Comparing Plans: Medicare Advantage vs. Original Medicare + Medigap

Use these tools to compare options:

Medicare Plan Finder: On Medicare.gov, this tool allows you to compare Medicare Advantage, Medicare Supplements, and Part D plans based on your prescriptions and ZIP code. NOTE: Use this tool before talking to any insurance agent. Knowledge is power!

State Health Insurance Assistance Programs (SHIPs): Free local counseling from unbiased experts.

Understanding Medigap (Medicare Supplement Plans) Medigap policies help cover out-of-pocket costs that Original Medicare doesn’t. Key facts:

The best time to enroll is during your 6-month Medigap Open Enrollment Period (starts when you’re both 65 and enrolled in Part B).

Use your state's Department of Insurance website to find approved insurers and standardized plan options.

Prescription Drug Coverage (Part D)

Even if you don't take prescriptions now, enrolling on time is critical to avoid penalties later.

Compare plans via Medicare Plan Finder.

Pay attention to formularies, copays, and pharmacy networks.

NOTE: If you do not take any medications (or expensive medications) there are plans with zero premium in many states in 2025.

Financial Assistance Programs

If you’re on a limited income, help is available:

Extra Help: Reduces costs for Part D (apply at SSA.gov).

Medicaid: May help cover Medicare costs if you meet income and asset limits.

Medicare Savings Programs: Offered by states to help pay Part A and B premiums and out-of-pocket costs.
